01Developed into poverty
In 1972, Rodney published How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, which opens with a sentence that reframes the whole conversation: Africa was not underdeveloped. Africa was developed — into poverty. Not accidentally. Deliberately, by mechanisms that can be identified and traced.
02Who benefits, and what maintains it
His method was to keep asking the question the shrug is designed to end: who benefits from this arrangement, and what maintains it? Rodney reads the exterior of the same field Cedric Robinson reads the interior of — how the outside was engineered into underdevelopment, and how the machinery persists through changing forms, whether the label is colonialism, structural adjustment, or the resource curse.
03One structure, four readings
Four readers stand at different positions on the same field and see the same demon. Robinson reads the interior of capitalism — how race lives in the mechanism. Rodney reads the exterior — how the outside was engineered into underdevelopment. Fanon reads the body and the mind — how the colony enters the self. Mbembe reads the postcolony — how the logic persists after the flag comes down. One structure under four readings. This site's chapter on the colony calls it that: one demon, four vantage points.
04The book survived
Robinson's Black Marxism was kept out of print for most of a decade. Rodney was murdered. One argument was ignored; the other man was killed for making it. Both survived, because the condition they describe is still operating, and the people living inside it have not stopped thinking clearly about it. It didn't stay on the outside.
